Layali el Cinema celebrates Black History Month with a screening of the Sudanese 1977 classic, Gadalla Gubara’s Tajouje.

Set over a century ago in eastern Sudan, Tajouje unfolds within an isolated tribal community governed by strict traditions. Tajouje is admired by her young cousin, a young tribal leader, who openly declares his love for her through song. Violating tribal customs, his public confession leads his uncle to reject his request for marriage. Although the young man later leaves in shame and offers an apology—eventually securing permission to marry—another suitor has already claimed Tajouje’s attention. This turn of events plunges the young man into jealousy, setting the stage for an emotionally charged conflict shaped by love, honour, and tradition.

Followed by a film discussion.
