TAF 2021 Fundraiser: “You Will Die at 20” + Director Talk

Virtual

Toronto Arab Film (TAF) is pleased to announce the dates, and film, for their first fundraiser, a week-long screening of the acclaimed Sudanese film You Will Die at Twenty, a coming-of-death tale, from director Amjad Abu Alala. The film was Sudan’s first ever entry into the Academy Awards, as best International feature film.

You Will Die at Twenty will be available for streaming during the fundraiser from November 24 to 30, 2021. The fundraiser is in support of TAF’s Mahrajan, the annual film festival; it’s 3rd edition will run from May 26-29, 2022.

A “folk tale turns existential”, writes New York Times writer, Devika Girish. In his debut feature, “Amjad Abu Alala deepens a fable-like premise into a lyrical confrontation with the certitudes of faith and the life-giving powers of doubt.” ‘To never sin is to never truly know piety’, utters one of the film’s characters, a line that seems to sum up the existential nature of the film and the prototypical and constant duality of Middle Eastern and, ultimately, universal spirituality. TAF is excited to make this hard to access Northern African masterpiece available to Canadian film lovers.

There are tiered ticket prices for the Fundraiser, ranging from $15 (access to stream the film), $30 (access to stream the film + entry into a raffle) and $50 (access to stream the film + entry into the raffle + ticket to the Fundraiser after party).
