Layali el Cinema is delighted to be partnering with Reel Canada for this screening of Philippe Falardeau’s Academy Award–nominated film Monsieur Lazhar in celebration of Canadian Film Day.
Following the tragic suicide of a popular teacher at a Montréal public grade school, an Algerian immigrant is hired to replace her. As he helps his students deal with their grief, his own struggles are revealed. Based on the play “Bashir Lazhar” by Évelyne de la Chenelière, “Monsieur Lazhar” explores exile, loss and the healing that can be found through human connection.
