TAF2025: Crafting Your Budget Workshop

TAF2025: Crafting Your Budget Workshop

Centre for Social Innovation – Annex, Bathurst Street, Toronto, ON, Canada

At the concept stage, it’s easy to dream big. You imagine the perfect version of your story, envisioning every scene at its absolute best. But as development moves forward, creative vision must meet practical reality.

This workshop explores how to approach budgeting not as a limitation, but as a creative tool. It’s not just about cutting costs — it’s about strategically allocating your resources to get the greatest impact on screen. You’ll learn how to evaluate where each dollar will serve your production best and how smart financial planning can elevate, rather than restrict, your storytelling.

Key considerations include:

  • Speaking roles vs. background performers
  • Working with children, animals, or vehicles
  • Choosing locations and shooting times (day vs. night, weather, season)
  • Period pieces, costumes, hair and makeup
  • Music, copyright, stunts, special effects (practical and digital), and more

Through real-world examples and hands-on tips, this session will help you find the balance between ambition and affordability — and show how flexibility and informed choices can lead to truly inspired filmmaking.
